For many Lessors with teams operating across multiple time zones, it is critical to maximize system availability. This requires a holistic study of all aspects of system operations, but we have found the daily and monthly execution of batch processing like Nightly Job Stream (NJS) to be “low-hanging fruit” to monitor and improve performance.

The first step is to review all the batch processes and identify key aspects of each one:

  • Does the process modify data?
  • Do other processes or systems depend upon this process?
  • How long does it typically take to run?

With answers to each of these questions, we can focus on those processes ripe for improvement.

Within InfoLease (Rev 9 or IL10), the answers to the first two questions are almost always “Yes”! But we’ll need to dig into the NJS Log for run times of each sub-process. If you haven’t already implemented a report to review the NJS run durations, you can start with the following basic reports:

InfoLease Rev 9

sort DB.NJS.LOG BY-DSND @ID NJS.LOG.PROCESS FMT "35L" NJS.LOG.PROCESS.DATE
FMT "10" NJS.LOG.START.TIME FMT "10R" NJS.LOG.END.TIME FMT "10R"
NJS.LOG.START.DATE FMT "10R" NJS.LOG.END.DATE FMT "10R"

InfoLease 10

SELECT
DB_NJS_LOG_NF_ID
,NJS_LOG_PROCESS
,NJS_LOG_PROCESS_DATE
,NJS_LOG_START_TIME
,NJS_LOG_END_TIME
,NJS_LOG_START_DATE
,NJS_LOG_END_DATE
FROM
DB_NJS_L_NJS_LOG_PROCESS_PH ORDER BY DB_NJS_LOG_NF_ID DESC, NJS_LOG_START_DATE ASC, NJS_LOG_START_TIME ASC

Usually, the most time consuming sub-process is the REPORT.QUEUE.DUMP. (Note: This applies to IL9 only as IL10 relies on external reporting applications such as Pentaho.) If this rings true, and you need to make improvements, look to execute some or all these reports outside of the NJS using a combination of system schedulers and shell or .bat scripting.

Notes

  • By updating the report to include or exclude records with a process name NJS.EXIT5, you can filter in/out Month End NJS runs.
  • For the creation of a virtual field that also displays the total run time of any process, please email us at trailmix@tamaracknow.com with your IL version (9 or 10), and we’ll send the UATB/SQL to perform this field.
